Starcross Yacht Club

Starcross Yacht Club

Club Information

This club is one of the oldest sailing clubs in the British Isles, having been formed by the Earl of Devon to organise sailing regattas. The Club celebrates its 250th anniversary in 2022. In current times the Club is a modern and informal family club devoted to the pursuit of small boat sailing.  Originally located in Starcross village, since 1957 the Club is now located at Powderham Point on the West bank of the Exe Estuary. There are changing rooms, showers, plus launching and berthing facilities for sailing dinghies and catamarans.

The present location affords a secluded and private venue which includes car parking.  The Clubhouse boasts picturesque views of the Estuary, where excellent sailing can be enjoyed.  The Club provides a galley service and a bar.  Storage racks for tenders are available. There is limited winter storage for day-boats but most members make use of the boatyards and craning facilities upstream at Topsham, Exeter Quay or downstream at Exmouth. Members can also hire dinghies – a Laser, 3 Comet Trios, 2 RS Fevas, 5 Toppers, a Wayfarer and Wanderer and even a Dart 15 catamaran.

Starcross is one of the most active dinghy racing clubs in the Southwest and operates all year round. The dinghy racing is run on a handicap basis; however, there are some class races including events for the RS100, RS400, RS200, Merlin Rocket, Hurricane, Hornet, Topper, Dart, Solo, Gull, Laser and many more. All races have full RIB safety boat cover. The Club also offers dinghy cruising up or down the River Exe and Free Sailing (with safety cover), which embraces all non-motor-powered water craft. There is a strong cruiser fleet occupying moorings off the Club, and facilities are provided to these members for the storage of tenders and outboard motors. Members regularly cruise to Torbay or the River Dart for weekends, as well as enjoying the many sheltered estuaries of the South Devon and Cornish coastlines or crossing to the Channel Isles or Brittany. Some have completed circumnavigations of Great Britain.

SYC is a registered RYA training centre. The Club has run a large youth training section for many years between April and July, helping and coaching the younger members of the sailing club to acquire and improve their sailing and racing skills. Many have gone on to National and International levels. As well as this the youth training focuses on fun, meeting people and making new friends.

SYC provides training for all levels and abilities. Members benefit from a wide range of formal and informal training opportunities. The club offers a variety of high-quality RYA sailing and powerboat courses leading to nationally recognised certificates and qualifications. SYC’s social calendar comprises informal supper parties in April and October, as well as summer parties, coinciding with the club’s Open Day or forming a part of hosting the River Exe Regatta.
